Australian Landscape and Sports Photographer based on the NSW East Coast.
For as long as I can remember I have always been intrigued by photography. My first camera was a Polaroid Instamatic, you know the ones that develop the image in 60 seconds. At 18 I had moved on to an Olympus 35mm Trip were I predominately took slides. My first SLR camera was a secondhand Olympus OM-10, later followed by a Pentax which I loved because I could use its panorama function.
The game changer came when I bought my first DSLR a Canon 400D and began the long unending journey of learning Photoshop, Lightroom and now Luminar Neo. Instead of a darkroom I had a computer, I was in business. I absolutely adore going out and finding locations in the landscape and bringing them back to the computer to see how the images will develop. But I didn’t start that way. I followed my son from one sports field to the next capturing him and his many team mates. Each sporting season saw me embark on a new project, a momento I could give to each child of their season, although I suspect those momentos will become more important to the parents, little keepsakes of their children to hold and cherish.
I was heartbroken when our son finally decided leave the game, what would I do with my weekends? And that’s where my landscape photography journey really began. I am a self taught photographer, YouTube and all of its content creators are my best friends. I am learning my craft from some very talented photographers from near and far who are brave enough to put it out there. I follow their journeys and learn with them.
Stepping out of my comfort zone I have joined my local Camera Club, first the Hawkesbury and then Milton Ulladulla District. I have begun entering club competitions with some mild success but am yet to enter anything bigger. Those competitions will come. I’m still working up the courage.
Photography is a creative process and it is the creative aspect that I find the most challenging. It does not come easy and I have to push myself to experiment and not be afraid of the results. Not everyone will like my work, sometimes I don’t, but as I transition from work to retirement I know have something that will take me places and fill my days.
